In your post you mentioned that psychology is used in advertising often, that much is true. This fact is why I disagree with your post. For example, if we see a group of 20 cows we do not say we see 20 cows we state what we see as a group, which would be a herd. This principle states that we group things together that are similar. Your post specifically focused on Gestalt’s principle of similarity. In psychology, I find Gestalt Psychology to be very interesting because it shows different ways in which we group objects in order to perceive them as a whole. Whether it is the principle of similarity, as in my example above, or any other principle, advertisers need to delve into the human mind to create stimuli that will promote action for their product. Gestalt principles are used everyday by advertising companies. With the arches, burger and fries in mind we are more likely to head to McDonalds and grab a burger. The vision of burger and fries makes our mouths water and we are suddenly hungry. We see the arches of McDonalds and we attribute food to them. Psychology is used in advertising all the time, and in all cases the Gestalt principles are used to promote action from individuals. We see the arches and automatically think of Big Mac and fries, right? This is Gestalt Psychology, we use the similarity principle to associate food with the arch even though there may not be a picture of food by it. McDonalds could be the easiest to identify by the golden arches in their logo. Any logo, any commercial or ad in a magazine uses some form of Gestalt principle. Today, marketing specialists uses these principles when advertising.
